People encouraged to donate blood

A’s B’s and O’s are missing! Red Cross calls on donors to help

The gaps are striking and they're meant to illustrate the need for missing blood types.

As the blood products supplier to 76 hospitals across the state, Indiana Blood Center is thanking blood donors for their generosity, and raising awareness for the ongoing need for blood donations in the summer months to ensure the availability of blood products for patients in our community and beyond.

The American Red Cross is launching a nationwide campaign to boost blood donations. "This blood is used by every person living in this country who needs a transfusion during an operation or after being involved in an accident", Mlambo says.

"When your child is sick the last thing you want them to have is not be able to get the medicine that they need, and that's how we have to look at blood", said Theresa Blank. "We hope you will consider donating blood and helping touch lives as our family's lives were touched during my husband's illness". It's not just blood: it's keeping families together. He needs blood, and a lot of it. But for the past four years, new Red Cross donors have declined by about 80,000 each year. So, what people don't understand is that you don't have to just give blood. Donating blood is a simple process and only takes about an hour from start to finish.

New Jersey Blood Services/New York Blood Center (NYBC) has declared a blood emergency.

In fact, the blood donor base is shrinking.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides global humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. A safe blood supply consists of a seven-day inventory of all blood types, but now the supply is below that threshold. Since roughly 20% of donors are students from high schools and colleges, the Red Cross is in desperate need.

THE National Blood Transfusion Centre is imploring all eligible individuals to support World Blood Donor Day collections on Thursday, June 14.
