As US president Donald Trump met North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on Tuesday, news network CNN got itself a coup: Its anchor Chris Cuomo interviewed Dennis Rodman, former American basketball player and close confidante of the reclusive Kim.
"Kim Jong Un and Trump had the shared recognition to the effect that it is important to abide by the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action in achieving peace, stability and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", KCNA said.
Many agreements have been made in the past with North Korea that have later fallen apart, and ahead of the meeting, critics expressed concerns that it risked being more about headlines than substantive progress.
Trump downplayed Beijing's role in the denuclearization process.
"I think he loved it", Mr Trump said, referring to Mr Kim.
Bishop made it clear that agreement between Trump and the North Korean dictator had to involve "complete, verifiable, irreversible" denuclearisation.
"No more rocket launches, nuclear testing or research!" Neither the USA nor the South Korean government would confirm that the Trump administration warned President Moon Jae-in ahead of time about the decision to suspend exercises.
Wednesday's report also said that the summit would help "in making a radical switchover in the most hostile DPRK-U.S. relations" that had "lingered for the longest period on the earth".
A summit between the US and Mexico to stop separating families? Both leaders had initially planned to leave the country on Wednesday.
After a day filled with smiles and handshakes watched around the world, the USA "committed to provide security guarantees" to North Korea, while Pyongyang committed to "work towards" denuclearizing the Korean peninsula.
Mr Trump's new position appears to adopt a "freeze for freeze" policy advanced by China under which North Korea suspends it nuclear weapons testing in return for the U.S. concession.
On Wednesday the foreign affairs minister, Julie Bishop, said the suspension of war games - a surprise concession offered by the USA president on Tuesday night that caught South Korea by surprise - was not in the official declaration but "the president spoke about it in answer to a question at a press conference".
South Korea, meanwhile, appeared to have been blindsided by Trump's change of heart on war games.
"I share president Trump's assessment of that when he thanked the leaders of Japan and South Korea and China for the solidarity they've shown".
Trump expressed his intention to halt U.S.
Mr Trump gave the North Koreans their own copy.
Trump rejected the idea that the USA was the loser in the talks. "The meeting was every bit as good for the United States as for North Korea". Trump described the drills as "provocative" and "inappropriate". "Because this is the goal we have hoped for and have been working for".
While China opposes North Korea's nuclear weapons, it also wants to prevent a collapse of Kim's regime or war on the Korean Peninsula. Any instability - or alternatively, a deal that leads to a USA -aligned unified Korea - potentially could put American troops on its border.
In China, Pompeo's biggest task will nearly certainly be to make sure the government holds up its end of the bargain enforcing the sanctions regime which the USA bolstered in recent months and which Trump credits for bringing Kim to the negotiating table.
