MoviePass Introducing Surge Pricing for Popular Films

We compared AMC's new monthly subscription plan against MoviePass, and it's a close battle

"At certain times for certain films-on opening weekend-there could be an additional charge for films", is how Lowe put it. And for an additional $2 to $6, subscribers can see an Imax or 3D film, neither of which are now included in MoviePass' plans.

MoviePass loses a lot of money, which is what one would expect from a business model that allows you to see a movie per day for $10 a month. But when you can't see the latest installment of Jurassic World for free, moviegoers may riot-or they may consider signing up for AMC's service instead. MoviePass customers can only book tickets through their mobile apps at specific movie theaters and are limited to tickets available on that day. You can't buy tickets in advance, and now you may have to pay more. They will also be launching a "bring-a-friend" feature, where subscribers will be able to purchase tickets for friends without MoviePass via the app. Lowe says the additional ticket will cost "somewhere near the retail price of the ticket", so it's unclear how this is more convenient than just conducting two separate transactions at the box office-guess we'll have to wait until August to see. MoviePass now only offers subscribers standard 2D movie options, but Lowe told BI the additional features will be available in the app by the end of August for an additional $2-$6. CNNMoney reported in May that MoviePass' parent company, Helios and Matheson Analytics, burns through approximately $21.7 million each month to keep MoviePass in operation.

The firm lost a whopping$150.8 million in 2017 after acquiring MoviePass.

The company followed up with, "AMC has repeatedly disparaged our model as a way to discourage our growth because all along they wanted to launch their own, more expensive plan".

MoviePass said its aim is to make movies more accessible while claiming AMC Theaters wants to turn a profit in tweets responding to the chain's announcement.

PCMag has reached out to MoviePass for comment on the Business Insider report and will update this post as the story develops.
