Monday marks ends of net neutrality rules

Net neutrality ends this Monday June 11th motion to keep it alive could die in the House

Multiple lawsuits and protests are expected to follow. The chairman of the FCC Ajit Pai says, "Everybody in the internet economy is better off with a market-based approach".

Those in favor of net neutrality argue that scrapping the rules gives major internet companies like Comcast or Verizon the ability to hike up the cost of internet use and limit access online. Last month, the FCC received the required approval from the Office of Management and Budget in order to keep with the June 11 schedule.

Net neutrality means that Internet providers have to treat everyone equally online.

In May, congress overturned the repeal with a bipartisan vote in the Senate.

"Those "fast lanes" will put those who won't or can not pay in the slow lane, making the internet look a lot like cable TV", said Gigi Sohn, a former counselor for the FCC. As we pointed out at the time of the Senate vote, the CRA now has to pass the House where the Democrats that support the Act are greatly outnumbered.

While it seems inevitable that net neutrality will end tomorrow, not much will likely happen at first. However, you might not see any immediate changes today. Several states, including New Jersey, Washington, Oregon and California, have gone so far as to push legislation to enforce the principles of net neutrality within their borders. The FCC voted to repeal those protections in December saying that the rules were too heavy handed.

"It's patently illegal for the states to make their own internet policy", Roslyn Layton, a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute who served on President Trump's transition team for the FCC, told CNNMoney last month.
