Microsoft Releases Office 2019 for Mac Preview

Simplified ribbon-Microsoft is introducing an updated simplified version of the ribbon that is created to help users focus on their work and collaborate easily with others. These will first appear in in the web version of Word for Office.com, and then roll out in later this month to the Insider versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Windows. This further cements the subscription-versus-perpetual license split that the company has already been exploiting over the last few years: Office 365 subscribers get a trickle of new features each month to their desktop applications; perpetually licensed customers don't. This feels like a much improved, and much more grown-up version of Office. It also comes with a word translator, improved inking functionality, customisable Office ribbons, and overall accessibility improvements. Microsoft says does not want to bring the new ribbon to Word, Excel, or Powerpoint physical apps just yet, as it doesn't want to make changes to disrupt the workflow in these apps. "Recent integration with Jamf Pro will add additional control and make it easier than ever to manage the velocity of Office updates across devices".

There's a simplified version of the Office Ribbon, which allows users to collapse it so it takes up less space and hides many options, or keep it expanded into the current three-line view.

Office 2019 suite includes a new roaming pencil case and ribbon customization, a new focus mode in Word, in-click sequence, Morph transitions, 4K video export in PowerPoint, focused inbox in Outlook, and more. Created to make the apps look more modern, the new icons are built as scalable graphics "so they render with crisp, clean lines on screens of any size", Microsoft says.

Microsoft also is making search smarter by providing recommendations that officials said are "powered by AI" and the Microsoft Graph programming interfaces. Following on from the initial business preview of Office 2019 for Windows in April, the company has now announced that Office 2019 will be available as a preview for Mac machines with immediate effect.

Microsoft specifically mentioned that they are planning to carefully monitor usage and feedback as the changes roll out, and they will update their designs based on that.

The first major change is the updated design for the ribbon.
