Microsoft pulls the plug on Windows 7, 8.1 support forums

Microsoft's Answers forums are one of the first lines of defence for users searching for resolutions to issues about their Microsoft product.

While the forums are more miss than hit usually when it comes to finding help, they are certainly very popular as lots of users post there on a daily basis.

"There will be no proactive reviews, monitoring, answering or answer marking of questions", Microsoft said in announcing the move.

Microsoft Community participants are welcome and encouraged to continue to use the forum to ask questions and post answers with each other.

Both products have already been removed from Microsoft's mainstream support pipeline (Windows 7 RT 1 support ended in January of 2015, while 8.1 exited in January of this year.) Extended support for Windows 7 is slated to run until January of 2020, while Windows 8.1 will have extended support until 2023.

Microsoft has announced that starting next month it will no longer be participating in the technical support forums for Windows 7, 8.1, 8.1 RT and numerous other products. The news is rough for those with older products but it hints that Microsoft is obviously positioning its staff for only supporting newer devices and products moving forward. Extended support includes paid support and security updates at no additional cost only, and that is what Microsoft could have meant. Microsft is discontinuing support for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 RT (so, Windows RT in general), among others.
