Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump in Singapore for historic summit

NKorean leader Kim arrives in Singapore for historic summit with Trump

Choi's fiery outburst at Trump's national security advisor John Bolton and Vice President Mike Pence had a fortnight ago been blamed for Trump suddenly, and briefly, cancelling the summit.

Bringing the Korean War to a formal end 65 years after hostilities ceased will also be on the table at the first-ever summit between a North Korean leader and a sitting USA president of its "imperialist enemy". The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

"The fact that we have been chosen as the site of the meeting... says something about Singapore's relations with the parties - with America, with North Korea - (and) also our standing in the global community", said Lee.

Singapore will spend about 20 million dollars to host the historic summit between Trump and Kim, Prime Minister Loong revealed.

"I think things could work out very nicely".

But of the president's six tweets since landing in Singapore, five were rants about trade and only one - "Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air" - referenced the upcoming summit. They'll later allows their teams to join them. But any request for the USA to withdraw its 28,000 troops from South Korean bases would likely be rejected.

Earlier Trump had said the meeting was a "one-time shot" for Kim.

North Korea has said it's willing to deal away its entire nuclear arsenal if the United States provides it with a reliable security assurance and other benefits. A second marathon session is expected to begin in the afternoon. Delegates were outlining specific goals for what Trump and Kim should try to accomplish, and multiple scenarios for how key issues could be resolved.

North Korea also conducting its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in September, which Pyongyang said was a successful hydrogen bomb detonation.

On Sunday, as the worldwide media swarmed Singapore and Kim arrived on a special Air China flight, just hours before Trump, there was still no word.

"North Korea's increased dialogue with other countries is a positive step, but before the world gets too excited they should remember that Kim Jong Un still presides over perhaps the most repressive system in the world", he said. "Given the history of the way KCNA has reported, I think that is a sign for optimism".

"It's unknown territory in the truest sense but I really feel confident", Trump said as he prepared to leave the ongoing G7 summit in Canada early and head to Asia.

Shortly after his arrival, Mr Kim met Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the presidential palace.

Pompeo, who shifted to his current role in the spring after serving as Trump's Central Intelligence Agency director, spent Monday morning preparing with his top advisers, aides said.

Asked by VOA News whether he would bring up North Korea's egregious human rights record, including its system of gulags for civilians deemed enemies of the state, and the unresolved fate of Japanese abducted by North Korean agents over the decades, Trump replied, "We're going to bring everything up".

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.

Kim Jong Un is 34 and could rule over North Korea for the next 50 years.

Trudeau tweets a "show of strength"?

Whether they could agree to a draft document will likely determine whether Kim and Trump can sign a tangible "outcome" at the summit.

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door", said USA trade advisor Peter Navarro.

There's just no recent precedent for the gamble Kim Jong Un is taking.
