Kilauea Volcano: Hawaii Explosion at Summit With Lava Flow

Small Earthquake Triggered by Minor KIlauea Explosion

There was "not a lot of change" to the lava flow, said Janet Babb, a geologist with the USGS' Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

The USGS said fountaining from fissure 8 reached as high as about 200 feet Saturday, and there was some minor lava activity from fissures 16 and 18.

Over the last five weeks, 24 fissures have opened in and near the Leilani Estates community of about 750 homes on lots of at least one acre.

Fissure 8 continued to feed a vigorous channelized lava flow to the east of the vent on Saturday morning. Magno said additional workers can be called in if conditions change.

At 12:51 a.m. HST, USGS says another small explosion occurred at Kīlauea's summit, which was of an equivalent Magnitude 5.4.

An eruption at Kilauea summit jolted the area Wednesday with the force of a 5.4 magnitude natural disaster and hurled an ash plume that reached 10,000 feet above sea level.

At Kilauea's summit, there continue to be explosions that shoot plumes of ash into the sky. To date, the lava has destroyed more than 600 homes. Fallout from the fountains has built an asymmetric cinder-and-spatter cone around the vent, with the southwest side of the cone slightly higher (about 115 feet) than the northeast side (about 65 feet).

Lava covers a road on the outskirts of Pahoa during ongoing eruptions of the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii, U.S., June 9, 2018.

The other half of the residents in a more vulnerable area are allowed back during the day if conditions are safe.

The USGS has continued to warn island residents that they are in danger of being exposed to flying debris from the "sudden explosive interaction between lava and water".
