‘Kaala’ missing the Rajinikanth charm, disappoints over opening weekend

Rajinikanth fans celebrate the release of his film ‘Kaala’ in Chennai on 7 June 2018

Having opened to an average response, Kaala collected Rs 5.20 crore gross at the AP/T box office on the first day.

Superstar Rajinikanth, who is now shooting for his upcoming film with filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj, must be on cloud nine with the performance of his recently-released film Kaala.

Despite releasing on Thursday and in the process gaining an additional day for the weekend, Rajinikanth starrer Kaala [Hindi] has turned out to be a no-show at the box office. But two of these markets need a special mention - United States and Australia. Moreover, even Kabali [2016], which was again a rejected film, had a much higher weekend of 15 crore.

According to Johar, while Rajinikanth has never really had a stronghold over North India, it is the southern part of the country that has thrown up the most shocking numbers. The film has raked in a total of Rs.6,64,03,397 in box office collection in Chennai city alone so far.

Directed by Pa Ranjith, 'Kaala's is a political drama and revolves around a Dharavi-based don called Karikalan played by Rajini, who fights for the underprivileged people. Tickets for the first weekend hadn't sold out in Tamil Nadu even two days before the film's release, which has not been the case for past releases of the actor.

The much delayed film also had to combat the tiresome Ramzan period in north India when most exhibitors are waiting to showcase Salman Khan's Eid offering Race 3.

According to a Box Office India report, it was slow start for Kaala at the Indian box office and the film was unable to pick up pace even in the next few days.

Have you yet watched Rajini's "Kaala" on the big screens? And the film did so in three days of its run (including the Telugu and Hindi versions).
