Jose Mourinho wants third signing before World Cup begins

Jose Mourinho Manchester United 2017-18

The Star goes so far as to claim that United gaffer Jose Mourinho "is desperate to land the Tottenham ace", and he wants the deal wrapped up before the World Cup starts on Thursday.

Manchester United are reportedly edging closer to securing the signing of Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld.

United have announced they have reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the midfielder.

Diogo Dalot completed his £17.4m move from Porto last week, but the 19-year-old was pictured on crutches at Soccer Aid match at Old Trafford.

According to a report from the Sun, Manchester United are desperate to finalise a deal for the Belgium global within the next 48 hours.

United are thought to value Alderweireld at around £50m - some £20m below Tottenham's asking price - but could now prioritise other targets in their bid to bolster their defensive options.

Toby or not Toby, that is the question Manchester United fans are wondering as conflicting rumours emerged about the possibility of Toby Alderweireld becoming a Red Devil.

The Manchester Evening News have been told by a "high-level source at the club" that United scouts are concerned with the Belgium international's "profile" and he is not the preferred name on Mourinho's shortlist.

'The club want two or three more signings at least this summer.

Manchester United finished second and without a trophy last term, while Liverpool FC also ended up without any silverware after they finished fourth and were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

But any deal is likely to drag on throughout the summer, especially as Madrid are now searching for a new manager following Zinedine Zidane's surprise decision to step down.
