Google Translate’s Neural Machine Translation now works offline on Android & iOS

Google Translate partnered with its artificial intelligence team Google Brain to rebuild the language translation service

Well, NMT has now been made available in the app's offline version as well.

Cattiau says said the team rebuilt Google Translate from the ground up within the past year and a half, which resulted in a "more flawless technology" than what they had build over the previous decade of Google Translate's existence.

Until today, Neural Machine Translation required an internet connection, with offline translation on mobile continuing to use the old phrase-based approach that broke sentences up into smaller parts and did not incorporate context or the broader meaning of what's being converted. By using context, the system can better determine the right translation for the sentence, which it then may further tweak to make it sound more natural. Each language set is between 35MB and 45MB, so downloading them won't take up too much storage space on your phone.

Google Translate's offline feature can be used if you're traveling internationally, don't have access to the internet or don't want to use your data. Google says the new capabilities are ideal for avid travelers and people in places without internet connections. That makes translations of paragraphs and articles a lot smoother, the company said in a blog post.

Translation apps can be incredibly useful tools when you need quick guidance on translating a phrase or word from one language to another, but tools like Google Translate often fall short when you're travelling and can't get online.

Google has updated its translation service with better offline translations thanks to an infusion of artificial intelligence.

The update is being rolled out in a total of 59 languages, and is available on both Android and iOS platforms.
