Even simple changes to the core product can take three to six months to develop but with Test Pilot, insane new ideas can be trialed much faster - and you get to choose which experiments to test.
What is it? Test Pilot is a sandbox of sorts that lets Mozilla developers tinker with new Firefox features without disrupting the user experience. The Firefox settings section will remain as it was before. Users can also save their custom theme and share it with friends.
You can check out these and other experimental features on Firefox's Test Pilot page. The browser now supports only "lightweight themes", known as Personas.
Firefox Color enables users to create their own theme by picking colours and textures across the browser window. You can access bookmarks from the sidebar, but clicking one opens that page in the main tab. Today, Mozilla has announced two new experiments for Test Pilot: Custom Color and Side View.
Apart from the customisations offered through Color extension, Firefox has received the Side View extension that lets you view two different browser tabs in the same tab, within the same window. Also, you can use the Side View extension to compare two pieces of text, such as side-by-side revisions of documents, without moving from one window to another.
Instead of switching tabs, users can hit the Side View button in the toolbar and add a recent or now open tab.
