Elon Musk promises self-driving Teslas in upcoming software update

The automaker's CEO tweeted over the weekend that the all-electric $200,000 Roadster will be offered with a SpaceX option package that includes approximately "10 small rocket thrusters" installed around the vehicle that will improve its performance and "maybe will even allow a Tesla to fly".

This version, unsurprisingly dubbed the SpaceX option package, will be, according to Musk, the finest auto in history, never to be replicated. Musk claims that "these rocket engines dramatically improve acceleration, top speed, braking & cornering".

"Not saying the next gen Roadster special upgrade package *will* definitely enable it to fly short hops, but maybe...", Musk later added.

As impressive as those specs are, Elon Musk over the weekend hinted that the next-gen Roadster may have a few more tricks up its sleeve. However, it appeared as though he was joking.

Follow-up tweets on Sunday suggest that the technology Musk has in mind is a cold gas thruster powered by a pressurized gas canister. "Total energy stored even in ultra-compressed air is low vs battery, but power output is insane".

Tesla produced the first version of the Roadster from 2008 to 2012. For example, those facing rearward could fire during acceleration while those at the front could fire under braking, acting as a high-pressure air brake. Concerning the open-top, Musk said, "What we unveiled with the Roadster was the base model performance".

The semi and the Roadster are expected in production next year, so it shouldn't be too long before we find out what the SpaceX package entails-perhaps a faster form of ground-based flight, or something with a bit more altitude. "Rocket tech applied to a vehicle opens up revolutionary possibilities".
