A United Airlines flight from Rome to Chicago has been diverted to Shannon airport in Ireland, following "a potential security concern", the airline has said.
A source familiar with the matter said a written bomb threat was found onboard the aircraft, which was carrying 107 passengers, eight flight attendants and three pilots.
The Boeing 767-300 jet was about 200 kilometres west of County Clare when the plane was redirected back.
On the ground, authorities at Shannon implemented emergency procedures which involved mobilising its own fire service and alerting other statutory agencies. It landed at 2.15pm following a discovery of a suspicious message.
The passengers of flight UA971 were in the process of being searched, he said in an emailed statement.
There are reports in Irish media that it was found in a toilet and handwriting samples have been gathered from passengers. They also confirmed that each individual's luggage is set to be thoroughly investigated, as well as the plane itself.
