A surprise announcement was just made today by the University of Oviedo and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) that researchers have discovered two brand new planetary systems, and one of these new systems is reported to contain three planets that are the exact size of Earth. The planet is situated very near to the star and takes only 19.5 days to complete a full revolution. The information was released in the form of an ISRO press release. This has listed India among the countries which have discoveries of planets to their credit. "Very few such spectrographs exist around the world (mostly in the US and in the Europe) that can do such precise measurements", the space agency said on its website late on June 8.
The planet is seven times nearer to the host star than the Earth-Sun distance which leads to its surface temperature to 600°C. "It's closer to Neptune", he said. The name of the host star is EPIC 211945201 or K2-236.
The second red dwarf star that was detected with a new planetary system is K2-240, and this particular star features two large planets that are double the size of Earth. But as yet another discovery of rocket planets that seem to show they are common throughout the universe, they are another sign that it could be more hospitable than we'd thought.
"The spectrograph is the first of its kind in the country which can measure the mass of a planet going around a star".
According to a Times of India report, scientists at PRL designed a spectrograph called PARAS (PRL Advance Radial-velocity Abu-Sky Search). By measuring the amplitude of the wobbling of the host star, the mass of the planet was found to be 27±14MEarth. PRL scientists, who observed the target for about 1.5 years with the spectrograph, made calculations which suggested that heavy elements like ice, silicates and iron content make 60%-70% of the total mass. The detection also adds to a sparse catalogue of 22 other confirmed exoplanet systems that have a mass and radius in this range, ISRO said. Only 23 such systems (including the present) are known to this date with such precise measurement of mass and radii.
