Eleven Dead In Boat Collision On Russia's Volga River

Emergencies services received notification at around 10 p.m. on Monday that the vessels had collided on the Volga River, about 250 metres from the riverbank.

The accident occurred late Monday (local time) on the Volga River several hundred meters off the shoreline of the city of Volgograd in southern Russian Federation.

Rescue efforts ran through the night after the accident late Monday near Volgograd in southwest Russian Federation - one of the cities hosting the World Cup football tournament opening this week.

They said five people were rescued after the collision late on June 11 near the city of Volgograd, of whom three were hospitalized.

Ten people were killed, while one person is unaccounted for, RIA cited the local emergency services as saying.

Emergency Situations Ministry officials said rescue operations ended on June 12 when searchers found the body of the 11th victim, a woman. At least 16 people were on the catarmaran, according to a statement from the Investigative Committee which has opened an investigation into possible breaches of safety regulations.

Volgograd will play host to World Cup opening round matches involving England, Tunisia, Nigeria, Iceland, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Japan and Poland.
