YouTube launching new music streaming service that rivals Spotify

`YouTube Music is Google's latest stab at a Spotify rival

YouTube Music will launch in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea next week (although, in South Korea, the service will only offer the YouTube Premium membership, not YouTube Music Premium). If you like an artist or genre, YouTube Music will put their new singles and albums right on your homepage, so you don't find out about Daughtry's new single months after it came out like me.

YouTube Music, which will be launched on May 22, comes with extra features like personalized playlists based on individual's YouTube history and other usage patterns, YouTube, owned by Alphabet Inc's Google, said.

With the merger of the YouTube and Play Music teams in early 2017, Google began laying the groundwork for a new service to "deliver the best possible product". As for what networks will be included in the service here, we'll have to wait and find out.

Our friends in the US have long had YouTube Red, which a subscription service which offered videos from major networks and other originals without ads.

"YouTube in general is where most music is consumed". And if you use Google Play Music, nothing will change - you'll still be able to access all of your purchased music, uploads and playlists in Google Play Music just like always.

Current Google Play Music subscribers will get a YouTube Music Premium membership thrown into their current deal, and have been reassured that "nothing will change". Entering the gym? We'll suggest some beats to get the heart-rate going.

YouTube is the Internet's biggest video site, with more than 1.8 billion accounts tuning in every month.

The Tuesday launch will cover the US, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea only, with Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom to follow in the coming weeks. YouTube Premium, formerly YouTube Red, will ask for a higher $12 a month commitment in exchange for a totally ad-free YouTube and original content.

That said, the new YouTube services are being focused on first-world markets initially.

If you're interested in learning more, head over to the YouTube Music signup page and add your details, but we'll likely hear more next week. They plan to expand quickly after that to countries like Canada, Germany, France, Russia, Spain, and Sweden.
