White House: Israel Not to Blame for Gaza Killings

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem will be remembered in Israel for generations.

"We believe Hamas bears the responsibility".

"Hamas is intentionally and cynically provoking this response", he added. "This is a propaganda attempt", White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said. "I mean, this is a gruesome and unfortunate propaganda attempt".

At least 52 Palestinians were killed by Israeli troops and more than 2,000 were injured, many critically, according to Haaretz.

Shah further rejected reporter suggestions that Israel should show any sort of restraint, saying Hamas is responsible for whatever happens. He also said the "large volume of live fire" used by Israeli forces was "extremely concerning".

Netanyahu thanked President Donald Trump for showing the "courage" to keep a key campaign promise and says relations with the USA have never been stronger.

Many expressed concern that moving the embassy to Jerusalem, which would effectively recognize it as Israel's capital, would spark violence.
