Public health inspector Elaine Bennett says previous year, two of 380 ticks collected tested positive for Lyme Disease.
Provincial medical officer of health Dr. Richard Rusk told CTV News there's concern over Miyamotoi.
Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health says past year, there were nearly 1,000 confirmed cases of Lyme disease in Ontario. "You may unknowingly be going in an area that has high rates of Lyme disease and if your pet is unprotected, they stand a very high likelihood of developing lime disease".
Lyme disease is a potential debilitating infection that can result in heart problems, extreme fatigue and nervous system disorders.
However, the tick carrying SFTS is not found in Kentucky, so physicians and public health officials are less concerned about this condition in the commonwealth.
Entomologist David Beresford said while we have seen an increase in the number of ticks in the region, the risk of contracting Lyme remains quite low.
May kicked off what is known as tick season, and here in Pennsylvania the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say tick-borne illnesses are drastically increasing. Fewer than half of people infected will get the classic bull's-eye rash around the site of the tick bite, and many people are not even aware they have been bitten, since ticks detach themselves after feeding. "If left undiagnosed and untreated that can progress in a more serious disease what we call the chronic form where it can lead into organ disease such as kidney disease". Rusk says Borrelia miyamotoi can be detected through a simple blood test, provided the doctor knows to look for it.
"They can be tested but the physician has to be thinking 'could this be something else beyond the ones that we normally get?'"
The CDC notes there is no need to panic if you find a tick attached to your child.
Avoid Tick Heavy Areas - When walking your dog, avoid woods, tall grasses, overgrown shrubs and decaying leaves on the ground. "While tick bites are common during the warmer months in Kentucky, tick-borne diseases are rare", she said.
