United States safety agency to probe Tesla crash in Utah

US safety agency sends team to investigate Tesla crash

"Consistent with NHTSA's oversight and authority over the safety of all motor vehicles and equipment, the agency has launched its special crash investigations team to gather information on the South Jordan, Utah, crash". The vehicle registered more than a dozen instances of her hands being off the steering wheel in this drive cycle, according data retrieved by Tesla technicians. The NTSB had yet to announce whether they will be looking into the Utah crash.

The driver was traveling at 60 miles (97 km) per hour when the Model S smashed into a fire truck stopped at a red light about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City on Friday night, according to police.

Drivers are repeatedly advised Autopilot features do not make Tesla vehicles "autonomous" and that the driver absolutely must remain vigilant with their eyes on the road, hands on the wheel and they must be prepared to take any and all action necessary to avoid hazards on the road.

The Utah driver repeatedly kept her hands off the wheel of her Model S, including for a span of 80 seconds up until the moment of violent impact, the report said.

"It's super messed up that a Tesla crash resulting in a broken ankle is front page news and the (approximately) 40,000 people who died in United States auto accidents alone in past year get nearly no coverage", Musk said in a tweet. On two occasions, the driver had her hands off the wheel for more than a minute each time, reengaging briefly with the steering wheel only after a visual alert from the auto.

The driver had been using the "Autosteer" and "Traffic Aware Cruise Control" functions of Autopilot, Tesla reported to police.

Using cameras and radar that can peer 250 meters ahead of a auto, Tesla's driver-assist software is created to track traffic conditions, keeping vehicles in their lane and changing speeds according to the speed of surrounding cars.

The driver manually pressed the vehicle brake pedal fractions of a second prior to the crash.

Police issued the driver a traffic citation for failure to keep proper lookout.

While its cars have Autopilot capabilities, people in the driver seats are called on to be paying attention and ready to take control of steering wheels.

Police in South Jordan said based on these findings, the woman was given ticket.

The US National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident, which led to the death of a 38-year-old father of two, Walter Huang.

It's now your nearly weekly reminder that you need to stay attentive on Autopilot and that rules of the road still apply.

The crash is the third accident in recent months that has occurred when a Tesla was in the semiautonomous driving mode.
