In the same issue, The Weeknd also spoke candidly - except, in his case, it was about his relationship with ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez. He says the album was "very upbeat" and "beautiful", but adds that he's now moved past that part of his life and confirms he's now - "without a doubt" - single.
During an interview with TIME, the XO crooner revealed that he planned to release a more upbeat album instead of the darker Melancholy. "Which wasn't melancholy at all because it was a different time in my life ..."
"It was very upbeat-it was attractive", he said.
But the heartbreak that came after The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) and Gomez's split led him to scrap the project altogether. Many fans thought the EP was sending shots at Selena Gomez, as he tried to rekindle a romance with Bella Hadid. He doesn't outright say that he shelved the LP because of his breakup - "I don't want to open that Pandora's box, talking about relationships", he explains in the interview - but still, it's pretty heavily implied. If asked if we'll ever hear the songs off the project, he replies, "Never".
Abel Tesfaye a.k.a. The Weeknd is on the cover of Time this month as one of the magazine's ten "Next Generation Leaders".
