Supreme Court to examine Centre's Cauvery management scheme today

SC rejects Karnataka's plea to stall finalisation of draft Cauvery scheme

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Karnataka's petition for a stay on the finalisation of the draft Cauvery water-sharing scheme, PTI reported. Various pujas were performed on the Cauvery riverbed praying for a good and early monsoon, both in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, so that farmers from the states would have enough water to execute agricultural activities, Pon Radhakrishnan said. It said that the control of dams and reservoirs should lie with states as opposed to the Cauvery Management Board.

"All the states concerned are making submissions to the draft scheme". In the plea, In the plea Karnataka asked the top court to adjourn the hearing as there was no government in the state. The top court also rejected these objections.

After facing a flak over the delay, the Centre on Monday had submitted the draft Cauvery management scheme in the Supreme Court for its approval.

Stalin said the AIADMK government should call the meeting and stress its stand in the apex court on Wednesday, when it, along with other three southern states, had been called to submit response on the scheme. It had on May 8 summoned the Secretary of Union Water Resources Ministry to bring along with him the draft. Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's unavailability due to Karnataka elections reason for the delay. The apex court had on February 16 asked the Centre to formulate the scheme to ensure compliance of its judgement on the decades-old Cauvery dispute. He said that the opposition parties in Tamil Nadu were accusing the Centre of using delaying tactics, without doing anything to constitute the Cauvery Management Board.

It had modified the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) award of 2007 and made it clear that it will not be extending time for this on any ground. The scheme outlined the process of allocating the share of the waters of the Cauvery River to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka taking in view the court's February judgment.
