The Grant project was set up past year at Lionsgate with DiCaprio and Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson producing a movie version of the Ron Chernow's 2017 biography "Grant". Given his and Spielberg's packed future, negotiations will be centered around pinning down when the two can begin work on the project.
Robin Hood scripter David James Kelly will pen the feature, which would be produced by DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson. Now DiCaprio could also star as Grant, with Spielberg as director. Both men are said to be in early discussions on the project.
Chernow, who also wrote the Alexander Hamilton biography that inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda's hit musical "Hamilton", will be an executive producer on the project.
For Spielberg, Grant could offer the opportunity to reframe the U.S. Civil War. Spielberg is planning to start production on a fifth "Indiana Jones" film next year, and is also planning a remake of the famous musical "West Side Story", which is now auditioning for roles. Where Lincoln allowed him to explore the country's conflict from the highest office in the land, Grant could give Spielberg a more "boots on the ground" military approach. And since Grant, despite his personal troubles, become a trusted general of President Lincoln, maybe he could even pull Daniel Day-Lewis out of retirement (again) for a cameo or more substantial role.
