Sky and HBO announce Adnan Syed documentary series

Adnan Syed

"The Case Against Adnan Syed" will investigate the 1999 disappearance and killing of Hae Min Lee, 18, in Baltimore County and the eventual conviction of her boyfriend, Mr. Syed, of multiple crimes, including first-degree murder and kidnapping.

The documentary will re-examine the events that led of to Lee's disappearance from "high school romance, forbidden love and cultural conflict, to the aftermath of her disappearance, the original police investigation and the present day, when Syed awaits a new trial".

The four-hour series, directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Amy Berg, is titled "The Case Against Adnan Syed".

By 2016, a Baltimore judge vacated the conviction and granted a new trial in light of new evidence challenging cell phone data that linked Syed to the crime, as well as testimony from an alibi witness.

According to an HBO news release, the series has been in production since 2015 and will feature new discoveries as well as "groundbreaking revelations that challenge the state's case".

The Case of Adnan Syed will attempt to trace "how the rush to justice and Syed's conviction in 2000 raised more questions than answers about what happened to Hae Min Lee, underscoring the instability of memory and conflicting eyewitnesses".

'The hugely talented Amy Berg has unprecedented access to those closest to the investigation, which is sure to make unmissable viewing'.

Zai Bennett, director of programming at Sky Entertainment UK & Ireland, said: "We're excited to partner with our friends at HBO to bring this fascinating and gripping case to television screens worldwide".

The series will also include original music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

HBO has not yet announced a release date for the series.
