S Africans, Tutu express solidarity with Palestinians

Israel’s ambassador to Ireland Ze’ev Boker

The Irish government summoned the Israeli Ambassador Zeev Boker of consultation on the recent escalation of violence along the border of the Jewish state from the Gaza strip, which killed 59 people living in the Palestinian enclave.

Ireland also summoned the Israeli ambassador "to express the government and the people's outrage and dismay" at the deaths of dozens of protesters in Gaza, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said.

Ambassador Boker was informed of Irish demands for an independent worldwide investigation, led by the United Nations, into yesterday's deaths to take place.

The ministry said Irish officials in Ramallah reported that health services in Gaza, already stretched because of a lack of equipment and essential medicines, were "overwhelmed with the level of casualties".

It said there were 211 recorded attacks against health workers in Gaza and 25 ambulances had been damaged. Despite the bloodshed, the embassy inauguration went on as planned in Jerusalem.

He accused countries in the region - an apparent reference to Iran's rival Saudi Arabia - of a "treacherous compromise and undignified passivity" for failing to strongly condemn Israeli actions.

This was the message at a small picket held outside the Port Elizabeth City Hall on Tuesday in support of The Great Return March, which is a series of rallies by Palestinian people culminating on Tuesday on the anniversary of the Nakba. "We call for an worldwide inquiry led by the United Nations", Michel said in a joint statement with Foreign Minister Didier Reynders.

The White House also blamed Hamas for the violence.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirım called on Muslim countries to reassess their relations with Israel due to the deaths, Reuters reported.

South Africa has taken a strong stance against the killing of scores of Palestinians by Israeli armed forces by pulling their ambassador out of Israel.

President Higgins also released a statement expressing his "deep concern" at the deaths and injuries arising from the escalating violence.

"Now is the time for all of us to give voice to the yearning among our citizens for new thinking on achieving peaceful resolutions to the conflicts which challenge us all".

"This is a victory only for extremism in the Middle East".

The Sinn Féin deputy Dáil leader has called for the expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador to Ireland.
