Lewis Hamilton Contract 'Almost Sorted', Toto Wolff Says

Lewis Hamilton wins the 2018 Spanish GP

But you know what, most of the time, the Spanish GP is.

Mercedes have offered an explanation for the delay in signing a fresh contract with Lewis Hamilton by saying both parties wanted to focus on improving the Formula One team's vehicle. Despite winning in Spain after one victory in the opening four grands prix previous year, it did not turn out to be the race that kick-started his season.

"Today was about gaining even more understanding of the vehicle and tyres and we completed more than the programme we set out, so it was very good", he said. "It's my 64th but feels special and unique". I think it probably impacted more on us than the others.

"But we know that this was a good circuit for us and the temperatures fell in our favor as well. So, we need to stay calm and humble, because it can be a different ball game again next time round".

A second consecutive win, a one-two finish, a display of sheer dominance and Sebastian Vettel off the podium - the Spanish Grand Prix was just the weekend Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes needed.

The Finn, Mercedes teammate to four-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, would have been a victor in Azerbaijan last month but for suffering a puncture three laps from the end while leading.

Hamilton started the season with pole position in Melbourne but Ferrari won the first two races. Hamilton pointed particularly to Red Bull's performance in the slow, last part of the lap in Spain, which echoes some of the characteristics of the Monaco track.

He added: "If we were to look at others, Daniel is definitely among them". Raikkonen's retirement made it a bad day for Ferrari, and one few saw coming after Vettel won in Australia and Bahrain, and arguably should have in Azerbaijan before the chaotic end to the race in Baku.

By the end of lap eight, the Briton was 2.096s ahead of Vettel.

Just before Raikkonen exited the race, a television commentator remarked on how extraordinary it was to see the young (and easily provoked) Max Verstappen not make a single error all weekend.

Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes team will head to Monaco "bloody worried" that they could face a repeat of their horror show past year. 'Silverstone was the first grand prix and we would have liked to see the 1,000th go back to the first, ' Sean Bratches, F1's commercial chief said.

Hamilton is now 17 points clear of his Ferrari rival, who could manage only fourth place at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya.

The strong performance of the Mercedes duo means their team has moved into the lead for the 2018 Constructors' Championship with a tally of 153 points.

'For whatever reason it is very hard to undo the DNA of our auto, and Monaco, as well as Hungary and Singapore, are tracks where we have under-performed at.
