Chandigarh, Indore, Bhopal Win India's Cleanest Cities Award

This time it was conducted for around 4,200 cities. The names of the worst performing cities would be announced on the day the awards would be presented, Hardeep Puri, Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs, said.

Besides, Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh is India's cleanest big city with a population of over 10 lakh. Bhopal has been ranked second and Chandigarh third in the survey at the national level. The exercise undertaken between 4 January 2018 to 10 March, 2018 enhanced the scope to cover a record number of Urban Local Bodies impacting around 40 crore urban citizens across length and breadth of the country by 2700 assessors.

Delhi got India's cleanest cantonment tag in the survey, followed by Almora, Ranikhet and Nainital in Uttarakhand, St Thomas Mount Cantt in Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and Jutogh Cantt, Shimla (Himachal Pradesh). Mysuru had bagged the award of the cleanest city.

Talking at a press conference, the Hardeep Singh Puri said, "Looking at the way big winning cities had turned the Swacchta into a Jan Andolan, I am not surprised at the results".

Maharashtra emerged as the "2nd Best Performing State" in Swachh Survekshan 2018 while Chhattisgarh is the "3rd Best Performing State".

In the category of cities with less than 0.1 million population, the cleanest city was Bhadson (Punjab) in the north zone, Bundu (Jharkhand) in the east zone, Kakching (Manipur) in the north east zone, Siddipet (Telangana) in the south zone, and Panchgani (Maharashtra) in the west zone.

Compared with the 2017 survey of 434 cities, the scope of this year's survey was increased manifold, said the minister, adding that feedback from 37.66 lakh citizen was collected and 53.58 lakh Swachhata Apps downloaded.

Citizens Feedback: To collect feedback directly from citizens and monitor the performance of Swachhata App, a citizens grievance Mobile App.

Earlier, this year, the Swachh Bharat Mission had declared Hyderabad as Open Defecation Free city.
