Gov. Nathan Deal to sign Hands-Free Georgia Act

Gov. Nathan Deal

The governor will sign the bill inside the North Wing of the State Capitol at 9 a.m.

The $26 billion budget is historic because it fully funds Georgia's K-12 education formula after over a decade of cutbacks.

Also, $16 million in funding was allocated for school safety in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, in February.

Governor Deal will arrive in Tifton at 3:30 p.m. and this event is open to the public.

Gov. Nathan Deal plans to sign the Hands-Free Georgia Act into law on Wednesday while visiting Statesboro.

According to a press release by the Georgia House of Representatives, drivers would not be allowed to physically hold or support any wireless telecommunications device or a stand-alone electronic device, such as an iPad, iPod, Kindle, etc., with any part of the body, while operating a vehicle.

The bill does allow the use of Bluetooth and hands-free cell phone usage. For a second offense, violators will pay $100, while three or more violations will result in fines of $150.

The families of the five Georgia Southern nursing students who were killed in a crash in 2015 will be attending today's ceremony.

Today's signing will be at 2:00 pm at the Statesboro-Bulloch County airport. The new law will go into effect July 1.

Here's what you can and can't do under the bill's provisions.

The bill passed in both houses on the last day of the legislative session.
