FBI, DOJ to brief lawmakers on handling of Russian Federation probe on Thursday

President Donald Trump went after former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper saying he was'not happy about what he termed'spying on his campaign

Earlier this week, Trump called for the Justice Department to investigate whether the FBI "infiltrated or surveilled" his presidential campaign in 2016, even meeting with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to discuss the issue. Two days later, Trump announced his intention to "demand" that the Justice Department "look into" that possibility.

Comey's firing and Flynn's hasty departure - he only served 24 days in the job and quit after reports surfaced that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about the nature of his communications with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the USA - led to questions about whether Trump hampered the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election. He just does not want to play by those rules.

The ultimate end game for Trump in discrediting the Justice Department may be protecting himself from being removed from office by playing to Republicans. So I think it's very wrong and I think it shouldn't be done. He also said that Trump did not request a second special counsel.

"I never revealed this conversation to anyone at the Trump campaign - I was uncomfortable talking about it, and I then broke off contact with that government organization representative", he said.

Mueller, a registered Republican, was appointed by Republican deputy attorney general Rob Rosenstein to investigate Russia's actions in the presidential election.

That gesture may give Trump a face-saving way to retreat from what sounded like a plan to order a criminal investigation that DOJ officials do not think is justified. If they had spies in my campaign, that would be a disgrace to this country. As he bragged in an interview with The New York Times previous year, "I have [an] absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department".

Press: Why Trump should thank FBI Trump administration sued for not releasing FBI morale survey results MORE and whether that constituted obstruction of justice. That situation, they say, "does not result from any explicit constitutional or legislative mandate" but is instead "based on an evolving understanding of prosecutorial independence and professional norms", which serve as "a fundamental check on presidential power".

Sunday was not the first time that Trump accused his predecessor of politically motivated activity against him.

The Justice Department's internal probe began in March at the request of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and congressional Republicans.

Trump said Tuesday it would be a "disgrace" to the country if it's shown that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had spies in his campaign, and that would "make probably every political event ever look like small potatoes". Trump's periodically erupting rage at this perceived betrayal suggests he is genuinely puzzled by the notion that Sessions recused himself as a matter of principle, based on his honest understanding of DOJ regulations.

While the president fumed over surveillance, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen stunned some lawmakers by saying she wasn't aware of the US intelligence assessment that Russia's meddling was meant to help Mr. Trump get elected. Comey later testified to Congress that internal reviews found no information to support the president's tweets.

Giuliani also told the Times Mueller's team should finish up their probe of Trump's actions by September 1 so it wouldn't harm the Republican Party at the ballot box in the November election. Like the president, they have an absolute right to fire an official whose performance displeases them.
