Denzil Ware to pursue grad transfer

Denzil Ware didn’t hide his happiness after the win at South Carolina last season

Denzil Ware didn't hide his happiness after the win at SC last season. He earned his undergraduate degree from Kentucky but also announced the surprising decision to leave the football program.

Ware, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker/defensive end, was expected to be a cornerstone of the Wildcats' veteran-laden defense in 2018 opposite fellow linebacker Josh Allen.

Ware was a four-star recruit coming out of high school.

"It was a very tough decision to make", Ware wrote in his statement. "I am announcing that I am transferring to another university as a grad transfer for my final season". I want to thank Coach Stoops and all the other coaches for everything they've done for me. He was suspended for a "violation of team rules." Thank you, #BBN for all the support over these past three years. To my teammates, y'all are my brothers. However, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said this spring that Ware was a full participant.

Ware was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week in Week 1 of last season after finishing with a tackle for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries against Southern Mississippi. Sophomore Boogie Watson is another versatile linebacker who could transition into the role. One reason those close to Ware felt he opted not to leave for the National Football League was to remain in Lexington close to his son.

He was one of 10 starters slated to return for Kentucky next season.
