But it appears that when Pochettino meets with club chairman Daniel Levy this week he will discussing a new deal for himself too.
The Argentine has been linked with a move to Chelsea since his comments, with the Blues looking to replace Antonio Conte at the end of the season.
"The financial pressures from the new stadium mean the manager is probably not going to get the kind of level of spending he'd like to see to move Spurs to the next level, and that makes him a target".
Ex-Tottenham Hotspur captain Graham Roberts has rebuked pundit Paul Merson over his claims Mauricio Pochettino could leave.
"I think Pochettino is well down the track of becoming a Tottenham legend and moving across London to a club which is competing very closely, that isn't a logical move". If I read that Real Madrid or Barcelona were in for him, that might be more credible.
But with the clamour for trophies growing stronger all the time, Pochettino, in an alarming change of tone, suggested that Spurs might have to ditch their current policy of frugality and "take risks" to start delivering silverware.
Around Spurs' rivals, Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and Man Utd's Jose Mourinho earn roughly £15m annually, Liverpool pay Jurgen Klopp around £7m, whilst Chelsea'sAntonio Conte and Arsenal's recently departed Arsene Wenger had deals that earned them £9m last season.
Spurs have finished in the top four in the Premier League for a third straight season under Pochettino which is a great achievement but there is a sense of negativity at the north London club right now and that is for the lack of return for the good work Poch has done.
