Charlottesville City Council to consider RaShall Brackney for police chief post

City Councilman Wes Bellamy and incoming Police Chief Ra Shall M

Members of the Charlottesville City Council said they hope RaShall Brackney will help heal Charlottesville after the events of August 12 as the new of the Charlottesville Police Department, but some community leaders are a bit skeptical.

The event will be broadcast live on the city's Facebook page and on Comcast Channel 10.

The City Council is set to vote on RaShall M. Brackney, an Arlington resident, during its meeting on Monday. That meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. "Chief Brackney is very mindful of the expectations of modern police departments".

"Chief Brackney will bring over three decades of law enforcement experience to our police department", said Mr. Jones. "I believe the Charlottesville Police Department is uniquely positioned to contribute to the national narrative for policing and social justice, and I look forward to serving the community with both compassion and integrity".

"It does not fall on deaf ears that there are a lot of people who feel marginalized - not only in Charlottesville but throughout the nation - and that we've created gaps between the persons that we serve and our law enforcement community", Brackney added.

Chief Brackney will begin work with the City of Charlottesville on June 18, 2018. Numerous issues which the police department faces will require time and effort to remedy, Walker said.

"What I heard from her was a decided orientation towards community partnership, and moving away from a warrior model of policing to a guardian model of policing". "And we know it's not going to be an immediate fix to do her work and [to] not be overburdened is going to take us as a community to change also". The council members participated in conducting interviews for the job and spoke favorably about Brackney at the news conference.

"Demand respect", Hudson said.

Brackney succeeds interim Chief Thierry Dupuis.

Brackney is the former police chief at George Washington University. (2017) from Robert Morris University. Chief Brackney is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia; the United States Secret Service Dignitary Protection course in Washington, D.C.; Redstone Arsenal "Bomb School" for managers in Huntsville, Alabama; and, Leadership Pittsburgh XIX.
