'Captain Marvel' won't be like the typical origin story

Captain Marvel: Structure For Origin Story Will Offer New Experience, Says Producer

Alas, times have changed, and the format of these movies has changed with it.

This is, of course, something that is a big deal to fans and, as Moore notes, it will only become more vital that these origin stories feel new and unique as more and more characters get introduced into the franchise.

Captain Marvel stars Academy Award® victor Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou (Korath), Lee Pace (Ronan), Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan (Minn-Erva), Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Kenneth Mitchell (Joseph Danvers), with Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson), and Jude Law (Marv-Vell). Moore revealed that the studio is trying its level best to make sure that the film stands out from other MCU films like Ant-Man, Captain America: First Avenger, Doctor Strange, and Thor.

Moore indicated that the Captain Marvel creative team would subvert the typical structure of superhero origin films while telling their story "in a way that will feel unexpected and hopefully keep audiences off balance". The film is now shooting, so it shouldn't be long before we figure out the major roles in the anticipated film. "For instance, Captain Marvel is an origin movie in that you haven't seen her before, but we think we've stumbled upon a structure there that isn't the traditional structure of what origin movies typically are". We can't wait until we get to see Carol Danvers in action! So, basically, the story structure is pretty predictable. Still balanced enough that they can enjoy the film, but even just making it a period film is sort of interesting in that it's not just a function of the world as we know it in the MCU today. Not only is it the first female-led solo movie but it is also their saving grace for Avengers: Infinity War. Read ahead at your own risk! The Infinity War end credits scene hinted that Carol Danvers' alter ego is going to have a major role in the rematch with Thanos in Avengers 4. We don't see the heroine at that moment, but it should help to lay the groundwork for her eventual arrival.

End of Infinity War spoilers. It will be in theaters March 16, 2019!

To be fair, it would be hard to accuse Black Panther of rigidly following this formula, so perhaps this is the end of the classic origin story for Marvel?
