Russian President Vladimir Putin met the Syrian regime's Bashar al-Assad in the Russian resort city of Sochi on Thursday, highlighting the importance of facilitating the "resumption of a full-fledged political process", according to the Kremlin.
Syria's Bashar Assad traveled to the Black Sea resort town of Sochi in Russian Federation on Thursday for talks with Putin, the Kremlin said.
Assad said the meeting at the opening of the Sochi Summit is an "opportunity to put forward a mutual vision for the next stage for the peace talks either in Astana or Sochi". "President [Putin] pointed out the Syrian Armed Forces' considerable achievements in struggle with terrorist units and congratulated Assad on this occasion".
"As regards economic cooperation, we'd like to point out a recent increase of Russian investment, the investments the Russian companies are making in various sectors of Syrian economy", Assad said.
"Stability is improving, and all this opens the door to the political process that we started some time ago".
"Of course, after this military success additional conditions have been created to restart a full-format political process", he said.
According to Putin, "much has already been done within the Astana process.
I have always said, and now I repeat once again, that we always enthusiastically support the political process, which should go hand in hand with the fight against terrorism", Assad said. "And of course, the next task is economic recovery and humanitarian assistance to the people who found themselves in a hard situation", the Russian president said.
Russian Federation has been a key ally of Assad throughout the seven-year Syrian civil war when many other countries, including the United Kingdom, wanted to remove him from power.
