Ambassador Haley sets the record straight on Gaza terror

Palestinians were killed on the Gaza border on Monday as they protested against the opening of the US embassy

Gaza City's main hospital is bustling with patients and mourning families on Tuesday as the Palestinian enclave reels from Monday's violence in which Israeli forces killed at least 60 protesters and wounded more than 2,700.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley strongly defended Israel Tuesday in the face of worldwide criticism of its response to violent demonstrations at the Gaza border, saying no other country in the chamber would act with more restraint than the Jewish state.

"We were at the tent camp east of Gaza when the Israelis fired lots of tear gas", Heyam Omar said.

Ankara has reacted with fury to the killings, which came on the same day as the USA formally moved its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

"No one would. No country in this chamber would act with more restraint than Israel has", she added. But Israel sees Hamas as being behind the demonstrations and accuses the group of using the protests as cover for staging attacks on Israel. While protests appeared to be lighter on Tuesday, during which Ramadan also began, casualties reportedly continued to rise as Israel responded with deadly force.

Germany, Belgium and Ireland called for an investigation of the violence. "That is violence that should occupy our attention to", Haley told Security Council members.

The US blocked on Monday a call for an independent inquiry into the Gaza-border violence.

"Who among us would accept this type of activity on your border?" "I look forward to the construction of a permanent embassy, and as Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I will do everything in my power to support the next steps".

Another key finding: Israeli Jews' love for the US president.

"The violence committed in the Gaza Strip yesterday is unacceptable".

The Kuwaiti ambassador to the United Nations told reporters that his country meant to circulate a draft UN resolution to protect Palestinian civilians. He didn't immediately give details of his proposal.

In contrast to the U.S. Embassy move, Israeli Jews proved divided on the issue of Israeli sovereignty over East Jerusalem.

Turkey and Israel on Tuesday ordered envoys to leave in tit-for-tat moves and exchanged bitter accusations as a row over the Israeli army's killing of dozens of Palestinians threatened a 2016 reconciliation deal.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said his military was acting in self-defence against Gaza's Islamist rulers, Hamas, who he said wanted to destroy Israel. Thousands of protesters set fire to tires, reportedly to obscure their positions from Israeli snipers stationed around the area.

The shootings come amid growing global uproar over the Israeli military's use of deadly force against unarmed protesters.

But he condemned the Hamas leadership for "encouraging incitement at the border with Israel", and demanded that the Palestinian Authority "do all within its power to end the violence, not inflame it", saying that Israel "has the right, and even the obligation, to defend herself and her borders".

Hamas has called for Israel's destruction and is in a permanent state of conflict with the Jewish state. The Arab League called the embassy relocation a "blatant attack on the feelings of Arabs and Muslims" and a "grave violation of the rules of worldwide law" that could destabilize the region.

Palestinian ambassador Riyad Mansour addressed the council: "How many Palestinians have to die before you take action?" Israel's ambassador, Danny Danon, says Palestinians are just using that as an excuse to riot.

He said Hamas may have secured some short-term concessions from Egypt in return, such as a sustained opening of the Rafah crossing point with Egypt, which has been open in recent days.
