Alabama Women's Golf: Tide beats USC, will play for NCAA Championship

With AP Photos.Haley Moore beat Lakareber Abe with a birdie on the first extra hole to give Arizona a 3-2 victory over Alabama in the NCAA women's golf championship. Moore responded to square the match at No. 13, but missed a couple birdie putts that would have extended her lead on the ensuing holes.

No. 1-seeded UCLA women's golf fell to No. 8-seeded Arizona in the match play quarterfinals Tuesday at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Abe's chip rolled past the hole and she eventually two-putted.

"It means so much".

"I just told myself, it's the same hole in regulation", Moore said. "It's wonderful. Ever since that putt it just helped pump my teammates up and I think that's what helped get us here".

"Two years ago, I started working with Ron Stockton and whenever you make a change, it doesn't show up right away, " Olson said.

Abe birdied the 18th in regulation to force overtime. "When I have played match play, I felt good...because most of the time I just felt like I had more drama in me and I just play a little more aggressive". "I think we'll hit in play, even if we have to back down to a 3-wood". The previous two came in 1996 and 2000. "Arizona is my home", Ianello said after hoisting the trophy for the first time as a coach. "So, I am so proud to be the coach to bring it back". The Wildcats are the fourth straight Pac-10 victor, following Stanford, Washington and Arizona State past year. On Monday, the Wildcats needed a closing eagle and an overtime win just to make the match play field. Arizona added a third national title to its collection by defeating Alabama, the top-ranked team in the nation, 3-2.

"Who knew that that putt could go a long way", Pagdanganan told Arizona Athletics. "Knowing that it has come true, it's awesome". It's the best feeling in the world. I'm so honored to have these girls as my teammates and to have met my coaches. They'll play for keeps on Thursday, shooting their third round. "That would put us in really elite company, and that's something we've all strived for all year is just to be the best we can be every single week and go out there and dominate".

Yu-Sang Hou won the opening match for Arizona, beating Lauren Stephenson 4 and 3. Kristen Gillman gave the Tide a 2-0 edge with a 3&1 win in the No. 2 group. Her second shot would be a bit tougher however, as it landed just off the green. "We played solid this entire spring, yet we didn't play our best". "It was fantastic. Going into this hole [18] I had no idea where we were at".
