35% of newly elected MLAs have criminal past: ADR

Unwind at our resorts’ Kerala Tourism advises new Karnataka MLAs after unclear poll result

There has been a steady rise in the number of Members of Legislative Assembly with a criminal background in the Karnataka assembly. A tweet by Kerala tourism, which has now been deleted, invited Karnataka's newly-elected lawmakers to the "safe and beautiful" resorts of God's Own Country.

When it was clear that the BJP was struggling to reach the half-way mark, the Congress reached out to JD (S) leader and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda and agreed that his son Kumaraswamy would be the Chief Minister of a coalition government.

Among the elected candidates, 54 are facing serious criminal cases compared to 39 in the last assembly polls in 2013.

Anand Singh - Congress MLA from Vijayanagar constituency has the most number (16) of criminal cases, followed by B Nagendra (15) - Congress MLA from Bellary and S A Ravindranath (11) - BJP MLA from Davanagere North. "The elections in two constituencies namely Jayanagar and Rajarajeshwari Nagar have not been held", ADR said. In comparison, out of the 218 MLAs analysed during Karnataka 2013 assembly elections, 203 (93%) MLAs were crorepatis, while in 2008, the proportion of crorepatis among elected MLA was 63%, said the ADR analysis.

The three elected MLAs with the highest declared assets all belong to the Congress - contrary to the popular belief that it is only the BJP, which has used money power during the elections.

The report also shows that in the BJP, there is a 5 per cent jump in the number of MLAs with assets worth more than Rs 1 crore, while it increased by 4 per cent for Congress MLAs.

Reflecting the high imbalance in terms of gender, only seven women will be a part of the new legislature that comprises a total of 221 MLAs. About educational qualifications, the report says that 65 per cent MLAs have declared themselves as graduates or above; 36 per cent of MLAs are class V-XII pass.
