Trump lawyer Michael Cohen expected at court hearing over searches

Stormy Daniels to attend court hearing of Trump's lawyer

In his regular broadcast Monday, Hannity says he had "brief discussions" with Michael Cohen about "legal questions where I wanted his input and perspective".

"But he said he never retained Cohen 'in any traditional sense, ' never paid him and never got billed for a legal fee".

Stormy Daniels' attorney Michael Avenatti's remarks outside of the courtroom were the cherry on top of the spectacle that unfolded in New York City on Monday, as he warned everyone who has associated with Donald Trump's attorney Michael Cohen in the last three decades that they should be "very, very concerned" about his radioactivity.

The hearing is taking place in federal court in Manhattan. "The president trusted Mr. Cohen as his fixer for years".

A third Cohen client is Elliott Broidy, a prominent GOP fundraiser who resigned from the Republican National Committee after using Cohen to arrange a $1.6 million payment to another Playboy model he reportedly impregnated. The Playmate became pregnant and elected to have an abortion. They argued that the client's identity should remain sealed to preserve his privacy and avoid subjecting him to embarrassment. "That's not enough", she said.

Avenatti could not immediately be reached for comment.

His lawyers are seeking $US20m ($NZ27.4m) in damages from her, saying she broke a non-disclosure deal signed before the 2016 presidential election.

Stormy Daniels, 38, caused a huge scrum as she arrived to see the president's personal lawyer argue which of his files the Federal Bureau of Investigation should be allowed to pass to criminal prosecutors.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, is engaged in a legal battle with Cohen over a $130,000 agreement for her to keep quiet about a 2006 sexual encounter she says she had with Trump.

Woods must decide who should first read the seized material and whether any of it should be excluded from the case against Cohen.

The letter demanded Trump and Cohen's lawyers be allowed to decide which items seized are protected by attorney-client privilege before criminal prosecutors see them.

She argued that if investigators wanted to see Cohen's work for Trump, they should have issued a subpoena. Another option is to set up a "special master" who will vet the material to determine what is protected and what isn't; that is the Cohen team's second choice.

Cohen's home, office, hotel room and safety-deposit box were raided by the FBI on April 9 as part of a long-running criminal investigation of his activities.

Lawyers for Cohen filed papers Monday saying investigators "took everything" during the raids, including more than a dozen electronic devices. They called the search "completely unprecedented".

"He is objecting that anyone other than himself" be able to make that determination, Trump attorney Joanna Hendon told the court.

Cohen, who has denied wrongdoing, arrived early Monday afternoon.

At one point, the judge made clear that for Cohen's claim to proceed, he would have to reveal the names of all the clients he has worked with since the 2016 election.

The Cohen raid, conducted by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents with a search warrant a week ago, sought evidence of those payments, which could violate laws on bank fraud and campaign contributions.

"Attorney Client privilege is now a thing of the past", he tweeted Sunday. "I have many (too many!) lawyers and they are probably wondering when their offices, and even homes, are going to be raided with everything, including their phones and computers, taken".
