Syrians rally in Damascus in support of Assad against US-led strikes

The Syrian government and its allies absorbed a US -led attack on Saturday and the targeted sites were evacuated days ago thanks to a warning from Russian Federation, a senior official in a regional alliance that backs Damascus said.

The United States, France and Britain have launched a new bid at the United Nations to investigate chemical weapons attacks in Syria, just hours after firing military strikes against Syrian targets.

U.S. ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said on Saturday: "We are prepared to sustain this pressure, if the Syrian regime is foolish enough to test our will". The French frigate Languedoc fired three cruise missiles, with French and British aircraft firing 17 more. McKenzie said there had been "no coordination, no agreement with the Russians" before the strikes.

The Kremlin says Russian President Vladimir Putin has told German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the United States, Great Britain and France have violated worldwide law and hurt peace process in Syria by launching airstrikes at targets in Damascus.

"This is now part of their standard combat doctrine", said Gregory Koblentz, a chemical weapons expert at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. "Trump did it to save face".

Assad also stated that the U.S. -U.K. Iran's Supreme Leader called the attack a crime and the country's Revolutionary Guard Corps said it gave "the resistance a more open hand", although it did not threaten to retaliate.

"She could have recalled parliament last week", the veteran peace campaigner said on Sunday.

For now, Putin has limited his response to calling an urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council. The U.K. Defense Ministry said the strikes were "successful".

Syrian opposition and activists have criticized the Russian Federation deployment in the town, saying that evidence of chemical weapons' use might no longer be found.

"Yesterday we were faced with an American aggression".

"Our worst apprehensions have come true".

The U.S. has raised the prospect of more sanctions against Russian Federation.

Facing a stark choice between engaging the United States, Britain and France in combat or passively watching them strike his ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin has opted for the peaceful route.

Syrians walk through the destruction in the town of Douma, the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack, near Damascus, Syria, Monday, April 16, 2018.

Without proper and timely diagnostic procedures and forensic analysis, it is not possible to determine unequivocally whether a chemical attack took place or to determine the agents used.

That red line has been crossed several times between the two chemical attacks in April 2017 and 2018 that triggered a US military response.

French authorities said the allies don't seek any military escalation, nor confrontation with Russian Federation. It has met with Syrian officials but has not visited the town at the centre of the controversy.

"We would have preferred an alternative path, but in this case there was none", May said. "And they will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons used".

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of global "chaos" on Sunday in a phone conversation with Iran's president as the two men discussed the USA -led strike on Syria.

But she will be questioned over why she did not seek parliamentary approval for the action, a decision that she and her ministers say was driven by the need to act quickly. Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, a lifelong anti-war campaigner, has accused May of " waiting for instructions from President Donald Trump".

The say the airstrikes last Saturday by the three nations were "limited, proportionate and necessary" and followed "only after exhausting every possible diplomatic option to uphold the global norm against the use of chemical weapons".
