Steam version of Chrono Trigger patched, looks better already

That led to some major disappointment, which Square Enix was very aware of. The most pressing thing wrong with Chrono Trigger was the ugly filter applied to the backgrounds and character sprites, but today's update has added the option to trigger the "Original" graphics, which is a good start.

Square Enix released the first of multiple promised patches for Chrono Trigger on Steam today, restoring the game's original graphics to be more in line with the original Super NES release. We're aiming to release the first of these patches in the first half of April, and the biggest change is that it will include an option to switch between the current high-resolution graphics, and the original graphical style of Chrono Trigger.

Updated Font and Dialogue Boxes: Fonts and dialogue window graphics are updated to give the game a more classic look and feel. The animated startup sequence has also been adjusted to be more like that of the original game.

The Chrono Trigger limited edition-which includes the game, PC wallpapers, a medley of the gaem's music, and digital liner notes by composer Yasunori Mitsuda-will also be available for an extended period, until April 30.

Originally released in 1995, CHRONO TRIGGER was developed by the "Dream Team" of DRAGON QUEST creator Yuji Horii, DRAGON BALL creator Akira Toriyama and the creators of the FINAL FANTASY series.

Future patches are in the works to address other issues, including improving the UI for controller and keyboard/mouse use and increasing the cut scene resolution.
