Shark attacks surfer in Western Australia

Man rushed to hospital after shark attack at surf spot

A second man has been attacked by a shark close to where a surfer was mauled but managed to bodysurf back to shore where friends applied a tourniquet to stem his bleeding. Former champion surfer Mick Fanning escaped unscathed when a great white attacked his board as he waited to catch a wave.

An ambulance is on its way to treat the latest victim, Jason Longgrass, who was attacked at Lefthanders surf break, near to Cobblestone Beach, where a man was bitten on the leg about 8.20am.

The man is now being taken to Royal Perth Hospital by helicopter.

VideoA witness to the Gracetown shark attack spoke to ABC Breakfast about the incident.

Fanning survived after a shark lunged at him during a final at the Open World Surf League event in 2015.

'There was a lot more thrashing around.

"Everyone's walking round like stunned mullets", Mr Jovic told the ABC. "I can't say how he is".

Another witness, Brett Newland, said there were about five surfers in the area when "a big shark popped up in the water amongst them".

"We're sending our thoughts and prayers to him and his family during this hard time and we're working together to do everything we can to support him and his family moving forward", Mr Majeks said.

Lifeguards said a 4-meter (13-foot) shark was spotted off a nearby beach two hours after the attack.

It seems like the waters were a little risky due to a whale carcass nearby.

The attack prompted the World Surf League to temporarily postpone the nearby Margaret River Pro surfing contest.

Surfers had been in action this morning in the competition before the attack.

Fisheries has issued a shark warning between Kilcarnup and North Point, and beach closures are in place.

Opposition Leader Mike Nahan said the attack would make worldwide news because of the Pro event.

We have been alerted of a shark incident that occurred near Gracetown.

"The current policies are simply not adequate", he told reporters.
