Senate confirms Mike Pompeo as Trump's second secretary of state

Mike Pompeo may speak like a tea party tub-thumper but he deserves a chance

This is disgraceful. If Hillary Clinton and John Kerry could each be confirmed as Secretary of State under President Obama by an overwhelming bipartisan vote, Mike Pompeo should be confirmed with flying colors.

Our members of Congress - Congresswoman McMorris-Rodgers, Senator Cantwell and Senator Murray - must not confirm Mike Pompeo as secretary of state.

Pompeo will replace Rex Tillerson, the former Exxon Mobil CEO fired by President Donald Trump on Twitter last month.

Pompeo overcame stiff opposition in the Senate from Democrats who warned he would add fuel to Trump's aggressive foreign policy. "Until now, Director Pompeo's record shows that he does not equally value the rights of all, in particular LGBTQ people, women, Muslims, and refugees".

"From North Korea's nuclear threats to Iran's aggression, Mike's confirmation as Secretary of State comes at a critical time for US foreign policy", said Ed Royce (R-CA), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Outgoing CIA Director Mike Pompeo has cleared the final hurdle to become secretary of state.

He insisted his focus will be on diplomatic solutions to problems, while pledging to bring "swagger once again" to the State Department.

"I am pleased with the Senate's confirmation of Mike Pompeo to serve as our country's top diplomat".

All the Democrats on the committee opposed Pompeo's nomination, primarily because of his hawkish views. But Mr. Paul, an outspoken foe of interventionist foreign policy, relented just before the committee's vote on Monday. Pompeo is expected to travel to Brussels before heading on to the Middle East.

Pompeo had already started diplomatic work prior to the confirmation with visit to North Korea at the beginning of April to lay the groundwork for upcoming summit between Trump and North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un.

But first, Mr. Pompeo must deal with Russian Federation.

"He obviously has the president's support".

Pompeo has been a stern critic of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, an accord seen as a victory for non-proliferation by America's allies, but as a capitulation by anti-Iran hardliners.

Pompeo is expected to be sworn in nearly immediately.

Although a decided hawk and more socially conservative than much of his staff, Mr. Pompeo's expected arrival has been greeted with quiet relief in Foggy Bottom, which has yet to recover from the tenure of Mr. Tillerson, who spent $12 million on a corporate-style downsizing that drove away numerous nation's diplomats and left behind a demoralized and disorganized staff.
