'Ready Player One' wins the Easter weekend box office

Steven Spielberg's big-buddget movie conquered the first round in debuting to $53 million domestically and $181 million globally

The box office analysts had predicted very little triumph for this movie as its stars Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke, are not household names and the plot of the movie, that is, "teenagers in a dystopian future search for treasure inside a virtual-reality world called the Oasis was exceedingly hard to explain in marketing materials", the report said.

Oxford Metrics, the Aim-listed software company, has earned around $1m for its role in Steven Spielberg's latest film Ready Player One, City A.M. understands.

Ready Player One has also fared well beyond its box office figures, earning mostly positive (but still definitely split) reviews from critics and scoring a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety reports the film opened to roughly $8.1 million in Korea, $7.3 million in the United Kingdom, $6.1 million in Russian Federation, and $6 million in France. The film based on Ernest Cline's novel stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg and T.J. Miller.

For the weekend in North America, Tyler Perry's Acrimony (Lionsgate) was second, collecting US$17 million, a sturdy total for a Perry movie that does not feature Madea, his gunslinging granny. Meanwhile, the third installment of the "God's Not Dead" franchise premiered with $2.6 million in 1,693 locations. The faith-based drama underperformed to the tune of $2.6 million, landing it outside of the top five.

Last week's opener Pacific Rim lost over half of its business and made only $9.2 million in the United States, enough for fifth place and a very disappointing $45 million after ten days, though its $186 million worldwide tally is much better. The sci-fi actioner, which held the top spot last weekend, has taken in $45.6 million domestically.

Continuing its limited release, Wes Anderson's "Isle of Dogs" made $2.9 million for a per screen average of $17,420 after expanding to 165 locations.

In total, the box office is down 21.2 percent compared to the same weekend past year, while the 2018 North American box office is down 3.8 percent from 2017. Ready Player One's total global debut amounts to $128 million, making for a worldwide total of $181.2 million. The adventure film debuted in theaters Thursday, March 29, and what it made that month is not included in the box office weekend total, yet it still came out on top.
