Pratyeka Hoda Sadhana Samithi demands special status for AP

Statewide bandh observed in AP over special category status

A state-wide bandh called by a people's forum for granting special category status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh is being observed today. The YSR Congress on March 15 had given a notice for moving a no-confidence motion against the BJP-led NDA government following the Centre's refusal to grant special category status to Andhra Pradesh and had found unlikely support from its arch-rival Telugu Desam Party. According to the reports, the outfits such as Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) are also supporting the call for Andhra Pradesh bandh. On the other hand, the Left parties staged a protest on National Highway 18, which connects Kolkata and Chennai.

TDP head and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed that bandhs were not welcome as they hamper development.

The report also said transport services between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are also likely to be affected as well with the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation announcing that it will operate its buses only till the Andhra Pradesh state border.
However, reacting to this, the YSRC accused him of adopting "double standards".

Rambabu added that CM Naidu should understand that the bandh was a form of democratic protest and he had no right to oppose it. "Why this intimidation? As long as they are peaceful, we will continue all forms of democratic protests", PTI quoted Rambabu as saying.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will observe a day-long hunger strike here on his birthday, April 20, in protest against the Centre's non-cooperation towards the state.

The Chief Minister made it clear that he will not compromise on securing interests of the state.

The protests for special status for Andhra Pradesh gathered momentum in the past few months since political parties demanded "Special Category Status" a year ago.
