Pentagon Says 'Mission Accomplished' With Missile Strikes On Syria

Putin predicts global 'chaos' if West hits Syria again

Dennis Ross, who served as top Middle East adviser to President Barack Obama in his first term, said the missile strikes would have little effect on the overall situation in Syria.

Bahia Al-Mardini, a UK-based Syrian journalist and human rights activist who fled regime persecution, told Arab News that Assad "is fully responsible for what is now happening in Syria".

Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin has said the struggle between the USA and Russian Federation in Syria "must go beyond proxy wars and geopolitical muscling". Later he tweeted: "Mission accomplished".

Several missiles hit a research centre in Barzeh, north of Damascus, "destroying a building that included scientific labs and a training centre", SANA reported.

In a statement on Saturday, the IRGC said the trilateral military strike on Syrian government targets will strengthen the willpower of the anti-terror resistance elements and deepen the Syrian nation's hatred of the Western-Arab criminals.

"To succeed in the long run, we need a comprehensive strategy for Syria and the entire region", Republican Senator John McCain said in a statement after the latest strikes.

Chlorine, in contrast, has been used more widely in Syria's conflict without past U.S. reprisals, and the chemical itself is far easier to find and weaponise, experts say.

But he appeared to conflict that message when he said on Saturday that Western allies were prepared to "sustain this response" if Assad does not stop using prohibited chemical weapons. British Prime Minister Theresa May described the strike as "limited and targeted", with no intention of toppling Assad or intervening more widely in the war.

Writing for the Istanbul-based Daily Sabah, Kalin said: "It must focus on establishing a legitimate, democratic and inclusive political order without the Assad regime or terrorist networks like Daesh, al-Qaeda, PYD or YPG".

The Pentagon said the strike was created to degrade Syria's chemical weapons capability without killing civilians or foreign fighters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called strike an "act of aggression against a sovereign state" and claimed they went against the United Nations charter.

On Saturday, the UN Security Council overwhelmingly rejected a Russian resolution calling for condemnation of "aggression" by the three allies.

U.S. ambassador Nikki Haley warned her United Nations counterparts that although the mission was designed as a one-off, that did not preclude further action against Assad.

The United States has warned Syria's government that it is "locked and loaded" to strike again if Damascus carries out chemical attacks. "When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line", said US Ambassador Nikki Haley. China too opposed the strikes.

"I urge all member states to show restraint in these risky circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate matters and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people", the UN Secretary General said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged restraint and asked states to avoid any escalation.

Western powers say chemical substances, most likely chlorine and sarin, were used in the attack and killed at least 40 civilians.

Were the joint strikes legal? 1.

"You can keep burning people alive and dropping barrel bombs over cities, but don't use chemical weapons, because it will make us look bad".
