Next Chrono Trigger Steam Update To Introduce Original SNES Graphical Style

Unfortunately for Square Enix, that surprise quickly turned to anger, disgust, and refund requests when it became obvious that they somehow managed to butcher a classic by bringing the mobile version to PC.

Not only will Square Enix be fixing up the port, but they are also extending the availability of the Chrono Trigger Limited Edition to April 30, which comes with the game, a specially edited five-song medley, composer Yasunori Mitsuda's digital liner notes, and six PC wallpapers.

"Thanks again from all of us on the CHRONO TRIGGER team".

Fervent fans of Chrono Trigger have flooded the Steam forums with complaints of how this release of the game on PC fails to capture the spirit of the original in much the same way that the mobile release did.

Back in February, Square Enix stealth released the acclaimed JRPG Chrono Trigger on PC that marked the game's first appearance on the platform, but notably the PC release was met with widespread negative reception for it being (largely) a port of the mobile edition, while Square Enix is now seeking to refine the game on PC in a new update. In short: Square Enix has a lot of great, classic titles in its repertoire, and these re-releases on PC very rarely do them justice.

Square Enix has announced that it will release a number of patches for Chrono Trigger over the coming months.

The first patch should arrive in the first half of April, and it will restore the original graphics used in the SNES release of the game, not those found in the mobile release. Chrono Trigger was one of the best-looking games of the 16-bit era, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a fan who would say its graphics needed updating in modern re-releases. At any rate, we'll keep an ear to the ground for more, so stay tuned.
