Mother arrested for forcing rape-victim to change statement

People protest over crimes against women near Rajghat in New Delhi. A minor girl’s parents allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to compel the rape victim to change her statement in court

According to a report in the Times of India, one of the accused in the case who was out on bail, offered money to the parents of the victim in order to settle and withdraw the case.

A 15-year-old girl in Delhi approached the police with Rs 5 lakh, the amount that her parents have received to force her to change her statement in gang rape case trial.

The girl has complained that her parents forced her to change the statement in court after taking Rs 5 lakh from the accused, police said. As per reports by TOI, the victim showed courage and made a decision to raise the alarm over the situation. The incident occured at Delhi's Aman Vihar area, the police said on Tuesday. She told the policeman on duty that her parents had taken the money from the man who had raped her a few months ago.

The girl had gone missing on August 30 previous year after which a kidnapping case was registered at the Aman Vihar police station, the DCP said. When the girl protested against this, the parents beat her and tortured her says the victim. "But when we counted, it was Rs 4.96 lakh", says MN Tiwari, deputy commissioner of police (outer).

A case under IPC Sections 195 (A) (threatening any person to give false evidence), 506 (threatening any person to give false evidence) and 120 (B) (punishment of criminal conspiracy) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act has been registered.

"On April 10, her parents were away in court when the girl made a decision to report the matter to the police".

He added that the mother was arrested while the victim's father and other accused were absconding.

They had recently come out on bail. They brought in a Child Welfare Commission team, which counselled the girl. Parents bring a child into this world with the promise of always having her/his back. While we, unfortunately, live in a society where rape culture is horrifyingly prevalent, have we truly lost all sense of right and wrong? We're sorry you had your trust shattered by your own family.
