With no experience you can learn to use a JavaScript Function and String within just a couple of minutes, with Grace the Grasshopper - the mascot for the app - guiding you through in simple steps that anybody can understand. After all, you might be slightly interested in heading down this path, but need a more bite-sized way to get started.

My one real hope is that as Grasshopper grows, the Google developers working on the app will add new programming languages for users to learn.

Laura Holmes who is the brain behind the development of Grasshopper app said adults neglect he coding study presuming to be complicated and Google wanted to break such mindset and likes to act as a launch pad thus encouraging the young ones to move further in the computer field.

Grasshopper is available for iOS and Android.

"Grasshopper was created by a team of passionate coders from Google's workshop for experimental products, Area 120", the Grasshopper site explains.

"We see Grasshopper as a launchpad to help introduce people to code".

I installed the app on my Google Pixel 2 XL and stepped through the opening wizard, which eventually asks if you've coded before. "They're using those moments to learn how to code".

"By the end of using Grasshopper's current curriculum, you should be familiar with core programming concepts and feel confident playing around within this playground to build interactive animations", according to the website. You can choose to have Grasshopper remind you to login once a day, every other day, or twice a week - or not at all.

Users can keep a tab on their coding streaks, the number of JavaScript keys used and the concepts unlocked through the achievements section. And it may be just what the real novice needs to take the next step.
