The revered rapper is also the most commercially successful musician to receive the award, usually reserved for critically acclaimed classical acts who don't live on the pop charts.

Kendrick's album is described by Pulitzer board members as "a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life".

Other Pulitzer winners this year included The New York Times and The New Yorker for their journalism, breaking the Harvey Weinstein scandal and kicking off the #MeToo movement and Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America, by James Forman Jr., in general non-fiction writing. The ties fuelled special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into alleged Russian attempts to influence the presidential election. The winners were the reporters of the Press Democrat, a newspaper in Santa Rosa, California, for their coverage of the state's deadly wildfires. The movie producer's attorneys have said he denies any non-consensual sexual contact with anyone.

The 2017 Pulitzer Prize for music went to "Angel's Bone", an opera by composer Du Yun. There are 14 categories for reporting, photography, criticism and commentary.

Kendrick Lamar is officially a Pulitzer Prize victor.

Lamar was awarded the Pulitzer over co-finalists Michael Gilbertson and his string Quartet and Ted Hearne's cantata Sound from the Bench. That year, two daughters of abolitionist Julia Ward Howe won for a biography of their mother - at a time when women couldn't vote and the literary world was dominated by men.
