They said the rights of Dalits and Adivasis were being questioned.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Sunday asked the Jammu and Kathua bar associations to call off their strike and chose to send a five-member team headed by a former high court chief justice to investigate the alleged incident of misconduct on part of the lawyers there in connection with the Kathua rape-murder case.

The girl's body was found a week after she disappeared from near home in January. In Kathua, policemen that were supposed to be investigating the case stand implicated, while a politician from the ruling BJP is the main accused in Unnao.

The police arrested the caretaker after an interrogation, in which it was alleged that the mastermind of the crime against the girl from nomadic Muslim community was committed with an aim to terrify the community and drive them out of the village. Protests were organised in several localities, with people coming together for #MyStreetMyProtest, an online campaign, as part of a silent protest that was organised across the country between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday. "We have to acknowledge that as a country we have failed our minorities, Dalits, Adivasis, women and girls".

On the second day of her indefinite hunger strike at Rajghat, demanding stringent laws against rapists, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal was visited by the parents of the December 16 gangrape victim. The 08-year-old girl was held captive in a temple, sedated and gang-raped multiple times before being murdered by the accused. The incident took place at 12.30 am near a railway line in the heart of Bihar's capital. "Both the accused (Chotu Kumar and Phekan Kumar) were caught by a police patrol".

"Intolerance and hate are hitting at the country's core values and posing a great threat to pluralism, the only option for achieving the goals India has set out for", she said, adding that India comprises a composite culture and no one has domination in it. However, what happened to the eight-year-old girl in Kathua can not be seen merely through the prism of the routine brutalisation of Indian women by sexual predators or political perfidy on display under Yogi Adityanath's rule since it has a larger and darker dimension. The accused, 24-year-old Nityacharan Jena, is a neighbour. Doctors who conducted post-mortem at Surat Civil Hospital suspected that the minor girl was tortured and raped before being strangled to death.

Meanwhile, she had filed a complaint with the Jammu and Kashmir High Court as well as the Supreme Court following which the HC directed the security wing to ensure her safety in the court premises.
